University access for refugees – specific information for funding foundations
Are you a funding foundation that provides individual assistance and awards scholarships for higher education? Have you considered supporting refugees with their studies?
Many refugees have started or even completed a degree in their home country, but their diplomas are often not recognized in Switzerland and it is difficult for them to enter the job market directly. Accordingly, completing a course of study is often essential in order to find a job that matches their skills.
For this target group, universities are increasingly offering support projects that facilitate access for refugees and offer support during their studies. The Swiss Integration Agenda and the new cantonal integration programmes from 2024 (CIP 3) also recognize tertiary education as a possible integration pathway. Despite these important steps, financing their studies remains a major challenge for those concerned.
Here, funding foundations can fill an important gap in addition to state integration measures. This offers added value in two ways: Highly qualified refugees are given the opportunity to build a financially independent life in Switzerland through training that matches their potential. As trained specialists, they can also integrate professionally into our society and economy on an equal footing and make their contribution.
The “Perspectives – Studies” project offers funding foundations an online information event on university access for refugees with the following topics:
- Opportunities and challenges for refugees in tertiary education
- Insight into the experiences of the atDta Foundation
- Ideas on how you as a funding foundation can become active in this area
